7 Quarantine Ideas For Teens Interested In Entrepreneurship

It’s a difficult time for high-school students across the globe. Plans have been cancelled, internship offers rescinded, and projects put on hold. To help those stuck at home with no idea what to do next, I’ve compiled a list of 7 quarantine ideas for teens looking to do something productive!

While researching what to put on this list, I looked at things that would help students develop essential skills and strengthen their portfolio, while being fun and engaging at the same time.

Go through the entire list because I tried my best to make sure there was something for everyone!

1. Work/intern at a startup.

The best way to develop entrepreneurial skills is by immersing yourself into a startup environment. If you feel like you’re ready to take on a startup of your own, we have a guide on how students can create their own business while in high school which you can find here:

If you’re not looking to launch a startup of your own, you might want to consider interning at one instead. Here are a few resources to help you find and secure an internship that’s a perfect fit for you!

2. Start a YouTube channel or a podcast.

Creating and sharing content online exposes you to many entrepreneurial skills while also giving you a platform to share what you’re passionate about!

Here are a few reasons why you should start sharing content online:

  1. You learn how to create engaging content.
  2. You learn how to market and promote that content.
  3. You’re able to meet new people that share similar interests (via your audience, or other creators in the same niche!)

Here are a few great guides on how you can get started:

3. Create a personal website.

Having a personal website is a great way to showcase your skills, differentiate yourself from others, and it makes you more findable.

Unlike a resume, it can be updated constantly and serves as a sort of “home-base” for your online presence (I’m currently working on mine right now!)

It might seem like a daunting task, but you can have it set up in 1-2 hours with no prior experience. There’s one resource that I consider to be the best, most up to date guide on building a personal website, which I’ll link below.

4. Join a COVID Hackathon.

If you love to create software and products and prefer technical projects over content focused ones, you should look into online hackathons.

There are a ton of COVID related hackathons running at the moment, where you work to create a software or product that helps support our fight against the virus.

Here are a few reasons you should take part in these:

  1. You’re helping the world fight the pandemic by creating products/services that solve a COVID related problem that people are facing right now.
  2. You’re gaining useful experience and adding to your portfolio.
  3. You can make new connections with like-minded people that you meet via these hackathons.

There are plenty of them out there, but here are a few major ones:

5. Host a webinar/online event related to your interests.

I know, I know, you’re probably sick of being invited to attend webinars by now.

However, if you feel like you have some skill/knowledge/talent that you can create a high-quality webinar or event around, it’s a great way to help educate others and give them something to look forward to during a time like this.

Hosting a webinar/event also teaches you a lot of essential skills, like putting your idea across in a structured manner, promoting your content, and getting people to register.

It helps to develop your public speaking skills as well! If you’re interested in hosting your own webinar or online event/competition, here is a guide to help you get started:

6. Do courses/upskill yourself.

If you’ve always had a skill that you wanted to learn or a subject that you wanted to explore, now’s the time to do it.

Plenty of sites are offering free access to their courses, and you’re bound to find something that catches your interest.

However, it’s easy to get stuck in a cycle of completing course after course, without working on your own projects. Don’t forget to actually work on something using the information you learn!

If you’re not sure where to start, here is a list of a few interesting and free courses that you can complete!

7. Join Communities Related To Your Interests.

Being in quarantine can get quite lonely. Not being able to meet your friends every day and being stuck at home can be difficult to deal with, especially if you’re an extrovert.

One great way to get your share of social interaction is by joining communities of people that share the same interests as you!

There are plenty of forums, slack channels, and discord servers full of people with shared interests.

Some of these groups are even beginning to set up weekly video calls to talk about the work they’re doing and have discussions about their interest!

Here are a few examples, but you’ll be able to find an online community relating to anything you’re interested in!

It’s a difficult time for all of us, and it’s easy to spend your time idling away on social media or binging Netflix.

However, if you’re able to utilise this time to work on developing your skills, you’ll come out of this situation feeling accomplished, and will hopefully have a cool project to show for it!

I hope these quarantine ideas for teens were able to give you some inspiration to get working on something productive.
